With its vastness and its gentle aesthetic, the «Sea» differs radically from the others. A moving play of light and colors bathes the wall of the great hall, and forms in sum a sort of backdrop to the general concept. The band of sea, extending to the horizon, is the only «empty» space of the hall; she represents an escape route for the visitors whose gaze is strongly pulled by the other installations. The calming effect of the light and the water contrasts with these lasts: while they pull, the sea gathers. In one sense, the sum of emotions is collected in the water, hoping perhaps to find some repose by her. The sea’s symbolism as Mother and Origin is very important. Without the sea, no life would be possible. She nourishes us and gives us hope. The vision of her infinity unlooses a profound nostalgia among many of us. «In Genoa, the sea accompanied us almost througout the demonstration. For many days, she played a central role for numerous people. Surrounded as we were by uncertainties and chaos, her neighboring presence gave us sentiments of stability and calm. Security was destroyed, however, because the police did not hesitate to violate our beloved sea to pursue the people who had chosen the path of the water to escape them.» * *) Quotes from Pino Scuro |
